Locker Room Update 2/29/2024

Dear Federal Way Community,

We hope this message finds you well. We wish to provide you with a crucial update regarding the temporary closure of the locker rooms at the Federal Way Community Center (FWCC).

Since our initial announcement of the closure, our team, in collaboration with Med-Tox Northwest and Innova Architects, has been working diligently to address the environmental concerns identified during standard testing. The testing revealed the presence of mold contaminants in the locker room area, and, as a result, we have initiated immediate remediation efforts.

As stated in our previous communication, the decision to close the locker rooms was made urgently to address the findings of environmental testing conducted as part of the Locker Room Renovation project at FWCC. The testing, carried out by Med-Tox Northwest on behalf of our contractor, Innova Architects, identified the presence of mold contaminants specifically within the locker room area.

We want to emphasize that while the closure affects the locker room facilities, all other amenities at FWCC, including the pools, remain open and accessible to our patrons. However, please be aware of changes to entry procedures into the pool areas and the temporary unavailability of the steam room and sauna.

Efforts are already underway to provide alternative locker room space, including restrooms and showers, to minimize disruption for our valued community members. We are fully committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all who use our facilities.

Key Updates:

  • Swift Remediation Action: Our decision to close the locker rooms was driven by the necessity to promptly address the findings of Med-Tox Northwest’s testing. This action is in line with our commitment to ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and enjoyment of our facilities for all patrons.
  • Facility Impact: The closure affects the locker room facilities only. The pools and other amenities at FWCC remain open and accessible to our valued patrons. However, changes to entry into the pool areas and the temporary unavailability of the steam room and sauna are to be expected.
  • Alternative Locker Room Space: Efforts are underway to provide alternative locker room spaces, including restrooms and showers, for our patrons. We understand the inconvenience caused by the closure and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this period.
  • These are the six major components that must be carefully choregraphed to make sure that our temporary facilities meet all code requirements and will provide the repositioned facilities needed. We anticipate having all of these items listed below completed and operational by the end of March.

  1. Shower and Restroom Trailers Ordered Completed
  2. Sewer and Water Connections Ordered
  3. Electrical Connections Ordered
  4. Access and Tenting to shower/restroom services Completed
  5. Permitting for Electrical and Sewer once installed Waiting Approval
  • Timeline Uncertainty: While we focus on remediation efforts, it is currently unclear whether the closure will impact the overall timeline of the locker room renovations. We are committed to keeping you informed about the progress and any changes to the project timeline.
