YOUTH CLIMBING CLASSES

Our youth rock climbing classes are perfect for young kids of all ages! Our smaller group settings allow for individual instruction that helps teach kids confidence in the sport of climbing. At FWCC, your child will build confidence, trust, and understanding, all while getting to climb and have a blast on our 27-foot climbing pinnacle!

LITTLE MOUNTAIN GOATS

AGES 4 – 6 | Tuesdays 4 – 5 PM

Does your 4 – 6 year old already climb on
EVERYTHING? We have a class that is perfect for them!! The Little Mountain Goat class focuses on the fundamentals of rock climbing techniques. They will learn climbing commands, wall rules, and learn to climb the wall at their own pace. No climbing experience is necessary! We will teach them the ways to be safe, confident and have fun! Class Includes rental shoes and rental harness. Please note class is limited to 4 participants. You must be registered to attend.

BIG HORN SHEEP

AGES 7 – 12 | Tuesdays 5:15 – 6:15 PM

We also have the Big Horn Sheep class for
7 – 12 year olds that will teach your child climbing techniques depending on their experience and capabilities. This class covers equipment use, climbing commands, and figure eight on a bight and single fisherman’s knot. No climbing experience necessary! Your child will leave the class not only a better climber, but a smarter climber! Class Includes rental shoes and rental harness. Please note class is limited to 4 participants. You must be registered to attend.

Belay Certification

Last Tuesday of the Month 6:30pm – 8:00pm 

Get more climbing time in for your friends and family by becoming a certified belayer in our Belay Certification Course. This course includes knot tying, belaying techniques and set-up, belay commands, fall simulation, climbing technique instruction and a follow-up test for ages 18+. Final test will be administered during an open climb session by reservation only.

Belay Test by appointment only. Schedule a time after you have completed your class! Certification must be renewed yearly.

Once you are certified, you may use the climbing area to belay. Bring your own equipment!

What Should I Bring?

    • Picture ID is required for anyone ages 12 and up.
    • Fill out the guest waiver on arrival

Family Cabanas, Men’s, and Women’s Locker Rooms

Age Guidelines

  • Children 11 years of age or younger must be accompanied by a responsible individual (16 years or older).
  • Children 5 years of age or older must use the gender-appropriate locker room or one of the family changing rooms.
  • Cabanas are first and foremost reserved for family use. If you do not have children with you, please use the locker rooms during busy family times:
    • School Year Hours: Monday–Friday, 11am–1pm and 5–9pm
    • Summer Hours: 1–4pm and 5–9pm
    • Saturdays: 11am–5pm
    • Sundays: 12–4:30pm

Rules 

  • Please leave the ADA cabana available for ADA members and guests.
  • Take a cleansing shower before entering one of the pools or the spa.
  • No running or horseplay in the locker room.
  • Food, drinks, glass, and gum are not permitted in the locker room.
  • No loitering in the locker room.
  • Lock your belongings. Locks are available for purchase at the front counter.
  • Personal belongings should be secured in a locker and not left in public areas.
  • We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Lockers are for day use only. Remove your lock each day and take it with you.
  • Management will cut any remaining locks and place locker contents in the facility’s lost and found.
  • No cell phones, electronic devices, tape recorders, or photo devices are allowed in the locker rooms.
  • Report any inappropriate behavior to a staff member.

Steam Room & Dry Sauna Guidelines

Age Requirements

  • Steam Room: Users must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Sauna: Users under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible individual 16 years of age or older.

Health & Safety

  • Limit usage to 15 minutes or less per session.
  • Long exposure to high temperatures may result in nausea, dizziness, or fainting.
  • Exposure to heat while under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, or certain medications can lead to serious health risks.
  • Elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with medical conditions should consult a physician before use.
  • Individuals with communicable diseases or open sores are not permitted to use the steam room or sauna.
  • Take a cleansing shower before entering the steam room.

General Rules for Steam Room & Dry Sauna

  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Street clothes are not allowed.
  • Glass containers are not permitted.
  • Cell phones, electronic devices, tape recorders, and photo devices are not allowed.
  • Reading materials are not permitted inside.
  • No exercising inside the steam room or sauna.
  • No shaving or waxing in the steam room.
  • Do not pour liquids or add substances to heating elements in the sauna.
  • Essential oils and fragrances are not allowed.
  • Do not tamper with thermostats or other equipment.

Lap Pool Guidelines

Age Guidelines

  • Children under the age of 7 must be actively supervised by an adult (16 years of age or older) in the water and be within arm’s reach at all times.
  • Children under the age of 3 must wear a swim diaper when using the pool. All diapers should be changed at the baby changing stations and disposed of in the locker rooms.

Rules

  • No one is allowed in the pool unless there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • Appropriate swimming attire is required in the pool (no jeans, undergarments, or loose-fitting clothing).
  • Running, pushing, horseplay, and abusive language are not allowed.
  • Only feet first entries are allowed except in designated diving areas.
  • Toys and other recreational equipment are allowed with the approval of the lifeguard.
  • No person under the influence of alcohol or drugs is allowed to use the facility, and tobacco use is restricted to outside areas.
  • Food or drinks are not allowed on the pool deck. Plastic water bottles are permitted.
  • Cleansing shower is required before entering the pool or re-entering the pool after using the spa, sauna, or steam bath.
  • Anyone with seizure, heart, or circulatory problems should swim with a buddy.
  • Spectators are allowed only in designated areas.
  • Per Health Department regulations, anyone who has been ill with vomiting or diarrhea within the last two weeks or has a communicable disease is prohibited from using the facility.
  • Report all incidents or accidents immediately to one of the facility staff.
  • Use of special greens in the pool may be restricted due to facility programming.
  • Any other guidelines deemed necessary for the safety and comfort of the patrons will be enforced.
  • Those choosing not to follow facility rules will be asked to leave the facility.

Leisure Pool Guidelines

Hot Tub Guidelines

Age Guidelines

  • Persons under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult (16 years or older).
  • Children under the age of 6 are not allowed.
  • Persons wearing a diaper of any kind are not allowed in the hot tub.

Children may be asked to leave the spa if they:

  • Are wearing a swim diaper.
  • Continue to put their head under water after being reminded once.
  • Splash or are disruptive to other users.
  • Enter and exit more than 3 times in 30 minutes.

Rules

  • Take a cleansing shower prior to entering a pool or exiting the hot tub.
  • Do not put your head below the surface of the water while using the hot tub.
  • Recommended length of stay in the hot tub is a maximum of 15 minutes.
  • Prolonged use may result in fainting or dizziness.
  • Pregnant women, elderly persons, and persons suffering from heart disease, diabetes, or high/low blood pressure should not enter the hot tub without prior medical consultation and permission from their doctor.
  • Do not use the spa if you have a disease that can be transmitted by water or have been ill with diarrhea or vomiting in the last 2 weeks.
  • Do not use the hot tub while under the influence of alcohol, tranquilizers, or other drugs that cause drowsiness or that raise/lower blood pressure.
  • The maximum capacity in the hot tub is 16.

Waterslide Guidelines

Rules

  • Maximum operational load: 1 person, 300 lbs.
  • Riders must be 48 inches in height or taller to ride the slide. Patrons less than 48 inches in height are not permitted to ride down with parent or guardian.
  • Swimwear with exposed zippers, buckles, rivets, or metal ornamentation are not permitted. Life jackets and other flotation devices are prohibited on the slide.
  • Riders shall remain in the holding area until signaled by the slide attendant before proceeding down the slide.
  • Riders must ride the slide in the face up, feet first position at all times.
  • Upon “splash down,” riders shall exit the pool immediately.
  • No stopping in the tube.
  • For safety reasons, pregnant women, elderly persons, and persons with heart conditions or back trouble should not ride the slide.
  • The Plunge Pool must be kept clear at all times when the slide is in operation. Parents/Guardians may not catch riders at the bottom of the slide.

Gymnasium Guidelines

Guidelines

  • Our goal is to have at least one basketball court available for drop-in use at all times. Pre-scheduled rentals and programs will occasionally interfere. We will display signage about closures at least 4 days in advance. Please reference the gymnasium online or get a copy at the front desk for normally scheduled activities.
  • Only coaches, trainers, and instructors that are independent contractors or employees of the Federal Way Community Center are authorized to offer instruction to other individuals or groups in the Center. The only exception to this rule is the coach, trainer, or instructor renting space in the Center or if the coach, trainer, or instructor is providing services to a member of his/her immediate family.

Rules

  • No equipment is authorized beyond what is necessary to play the game.
  • Proper athletic attire, including shirts and shoes, are required. Open toed shoes and high heel shoes are not permitted.
  • No food or drink is authorized except for water.
  • No type of audio music players can be used.

Please refrain from:

  • Dunking, hanging from rims and nets.
  • Using profane language or gestures and being disrespectful to staff.
  • Climbing on wall supports and curtains.
  • Using tape on the gymnasium floor.
  • Entering the gymnasium closets.

Additional Policies

  • All personal belongings should be secured in the locker rooms. We are not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
  • Soft soled, non-marking athletic shoes are required unless part of a pre-scheduled program.
  • Full court basketball games are played to 10, win by 1. During busy times, basketball games will be reduced to half court. Court use discretion is made by the gymnasium attendant.
  • If you witness any inappropriate activity, please notify the front desk or gymnasium attendant on duty.

Weight Room Guidelines

Age Guidelines

  • Persons age 15 and older have no equipment restrictions.
  • Teens aged 12–14 years may only use certain machines and may not be in the weight room/cable machine area. They are not allowed to use treadmills, step mills, or free weights unless they have gone through a Youth Fitness Orientation class and have received their badge.

Rules

  • Do not drop weights.
  • Proper athletic attire, including shirts and athletic shoes, is required. Open-toed (sandals) and high heel shoes are not permitted.
  • No audio players/Bluetooth speakers unless part of a scheduled class or training session. All other music must be played through headsets.
  • Personal Training other than by a Federal Way Community Center trainer is not allowed. Any activity that we deem to be training will be addressed.
  • Beverages must be contained in a plastic, no-spill water bottle.
  • No food or drink is authorized except for water.
  • Always use weight collars (clips) and spotters when necessary.
  • Return all weights and dumbbells to their proper rack.
  • All personal belongings should be secured in the locker rooms. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Use of cardiovascular equipment is limited to 30 minutes when someone is waiting.
  • Wipe down equipment when finished.

Group Fitness Guidelines

Age Guidelines

  • Group Fitness participants must be 12+. Special accommodations may be made for youth 9–11 after a discussion with the fitness instructor and community center supervisor.

Rules

  • Do not drop weights.
  • Proper athletic attire, including shirts and shoes, is required. Open-toed shoes and high heel shoes are not permitted. (Some programs do not require shoes.)
  • Beverages must be contained in a plastic, no-spill water bottle.
  • No food or drink is authorized except for water.
  • Always use collars when lifting weights.
  • Return all weights, mats, and other equipment to their proper location.
  • All personal belongings should be secured in the locker room. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Welcome newcomers by assisting them with equipment set up.
  • Try to set your equipment up in a considerate arrangement that allows for maximum utilization of the space for all users, even those arriving late.
  • Wipe down equipment when finished.

Track Guidelines

Age Guidelines

  • Children ages 0–4 must be in a stroller or carrying device.
  • Children ages 5–11 must be directly supervised (within arm’s reach) by an adult.
  • Stretching / Free Weight area is restricted to ages 15+.

Rules

  • Closed-toe athletic shoes only.
  • No food or drink is authorized except for water.
  • Refrain from walking or running more than two persons wide.
  • Slower runners and walkers should stay on the inside of the track, allowing others to pass on the outside.
  • Basketballs are not allowed on the track. Any type of use that is deemed to be unsafe (chasing, rough housing, etc.) is unacceptable and will result in being asked to leave by a staff member.
  • All personal belongings should be secured in the locker rooms. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Climbing Pinnacle Guidelines

Age Guidelines

  • All participants under 18 must have a Parent Permission form on file that is renewed annually.


Rules

  • All climbers must have a Risk Acknowledgment Waiver on file.
  • Climbers must weigh at least 30 lbs. to participate.
  • Non-members must pay a $3 equipment rental fee to participate.
  • No climbing is allowed during non-open climb times unless the belayer has passed our Belay Certification Course.
  • Climbers who have been belay certified through our facility will need to bring proof they have passed the class and their own equipment.
  • All outside equipment must be inspected to ensure it is safe for use in our facility.
  • No horse play or rope removal is allowed.
  • All personal belongings should be secured in the locker rooms. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
