The Federal Way Community Center is currently renovating its locker room facilities. Part of that project requires the installation of epoxy flooring, which began Friday. The application of the primer caused a strong-smelling odor within the facility today (August 5, 2025).

Out of an abundance of caution, South King Fire was called to the Community Center and tested the resulting fumes for potentially hazardous materials. The tests showed no cause for concern. However, the firefighters did state that those who have sensitivities to odors may experience discomfort.

We are confident that the Community Center is a safe space for all and are currently taking steps to reduce the odors and mitigate their impacts on those present within the Community Center.

Work on the locker room floors will continue for the next three weeks. While mitigation efforts will continue to keep the odor at a reduced level, there may be instances where it could be present.

Day camps and public classes at the Community Center will continue without interruption.
