By Doug Nelson
Community Center Manager
All good things must come to an end, and my days here with the City of Federal Way are numbered. I began my career in Federal Way in December of 2006 and it has been 13 wonderful years. I have accepted an offer to be the next Executive Director with PenMet Parks – Gig Harbor and therefore my last day on the job will be December 4th. The City of Federal Way’s Parks Department is, without a doubt, one of the best Parks agencies in the State of Washington. I would even go a step further and rank it amongst some of the best in the country. As a testament to the quality of individuals that I work with every day and the many I’ve worked with over the years, I will become the 7th City of Federal Way Parks employee to become a Parks Director in our state!
You’re probably wondering, “What does this have to do with wellness?”
I am a firm believer, and tried and true example, that when you surround yourself with happy, healthy people LIFE IS BETTER! The Federal Way Community Center was built to provide recreation, health, and fitness opportunities for all, and it has certainly met the mark. But more importantly, the Federal Way Community Center has become a gathering place where people of all walks of life come together for fellowship, friendship and fun. And while the exterior design, great indoor features and state of art equipment are all things to marvel, it is the collective heart beat that pounds within that makes it special.
And like the arteries that carry blood away from a vibrant, beating heart – members, guests, and staff-members of the Community Center take their passion for life, health and happiness to entire community of Federal Way. So, even if you’ve never set foot in the Federal Way Community Center, it is highly likely that your life has been blessed by the presence of an FWCC’er. You see, we take our zest for life and share it with our families, teachers, neighbors, co-workers, and strangers alike.
In closing, I just want to say how proud I am that we all stayed the course and turned the Federal Way Community Center into one of the true gems of Federal Way. And despite the countless members of this community that wanted to bury it alive before it even opened, the Community Center has lived up to its name and delivered on every promise made. Our community parks, pathways, programs, and special events are all additional services provided by our great Parks Department. My last message to you is to never underestimate the great value that park programs bring to a city. Opportunity for you and your family to reap the benefits of health and wellness is All Within Reach – its right around the corner at your favorite park!
Be Well My Friends,
